Abstract
This review presents a complete picture of current knowledge on microorganisms as sources of lipids used as bio fuel. It provides the necessary background about the culture of the microorganisms (microalgae, yeast, bacteria, and fungi) and their ability to accumulate lipids. Conventional and innovative techniques and alternative solvents for extraction of lipids from microorganisms have been detailed. A special focus has been done for lipids from microalgae.
