Predicted effects of climate change on nutrient availability and plant growth. Variables affected by climate change are shown in boxes, and soil pools in circles. Decreases or increases in rainfall with climate change (dependent on geographic location) will interact with the effects of transpiration and evaporation on soil water pools. Mycorrhizal infection may increase with warmer temperatures, and lower effects of N and P limitation in nutrient-poor soils (adapted from Pilbeam, 2015).
