Three-dimensional plot of plasma phospholipid DHA levels from rats fed a range of over 50 diets with varying levels of omega-6 linoleic acid (LA) and omega-3 alpha linolenic acid (ALA) to assess the validity of the pathway shown in Figure 3. The peak of plasma phospholipid DHA was attained as a result of feeding a narrow dietary range of 1–3 en% ALA and 1–2 en% LA but was suppressed to basal levels at dietary intakes of total polyunsaturated fatty acids above 3 en%. We concluded the data confirmed both the pathway and the utility of displaying it in a circular format. Individual raw data values are represented by black dots. Adapted from Gibson et al. (2013).
