We hypothesize that the gut microbiota has a buffering effect on the behavioural response to stress. The gut microbiota moderates the anxiety-like behaviour in strains genetically prone to anxiety (F344 rat, BALB/c mouse). On the contrary, it enhances the anxiety-like behaviour in strains genetically resistant to anxiety (Swiss mouse, NMRI mouse).
