Regulating trans fats in food

In light of discussions on an EU Regulation on trans fatty acids (TFA), FEDIOL -the EU vegetable oil and proteinmeal industry association which represents the interests of the European oilseed crushers, vegetable oil refiners and bottlers- shares its views on the upcoming EU Regulation and explains briefly industry’s action so far.

Coconut Oil Compounds Repel Insects Better than DEET

Compounds derived from coconut oil are better than DEET at repelling blood-sucking insects, according to a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) study.

In recent research published in Scientific Reports, USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists identified specific coconut oil fatty acids that have strong repellency and long-lasting effectiveness against multiple insects—mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies and bed bugs—that can transmit diseases to humans and animals.

Coconut oil itself is not a repellent. However, the coconut oil-derived free fatty acid mixture—lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid as well as their corresponding methyl esters—provides strong repellency against blood-sucking insects. By encapsulating coconut fatty acids into a starch-based formula, field trials showed this all-natural formula could provide protection to cattle against stable flies for up to 96 hours or 4 days. DEET was only 50 percent effective against stable flies, while the coconut oil compound was more than 95 percent effective.





Omega-3 Summit 2018: 29-30 October 2018

14th GERLI Lipidomics meeting: September 30th-October 3rd, St Maximin-la-Sainte Baume, France

GERLI is pleased to announce the 14th GERLI Lipidomics meeting, which will be held at St Maximin-la-Sainte Baume, France, from September 30th to October 3rd, 2018. The scientific program of this year will be mostly dedicated to lipid droplets in all states Under the title “Biogenesis and Fate of Lipid Droplets”. GERLI would like to gather researchers from various areas with common interested for lipid droplets, their physical chemistry and metabolism, their association with diseases and various applications in biotechnology, pharmacology and nutrition.

The meeting sessions, accommodations and gala dinner will take place at Hôtel Le Couvent Royal, located in the very nice cloister of St Maximin’s basilica. Situated at the heart of the Provence area, at a short distance from Côte d’Azur / French Riviera, it is considered to be the most beautiful Provencal Gothic-style structure in southeast France. The organizers hope that this unique environment will stimulate scientific discussions and potential collaborations.

The 2018 GERLI meeting will also be a milestone in the history of our association since it was created 40 years ago and launched with a first meeting held at Toulouse in 1978. Do not miss the opportunity to celebrate the GERLI 40th birthday.

Lipid and Brain IV, “Lipids in Alzheimer disease”: some pictures !

The French Society for the Study of lipids (SFEL), since 2007, organizes each 4 years an international conference held in Paris “Lipids & Brain Journées Chevreul” with the participation of several European scientific associations (2007 DGF, 2011 Norway L&B, 2015 SCI).

Lipids & Brain conferences have now become a benchmark in this field of research, the only one in Europe to date, and is backed by all international societies.
In October 2017, SFEL organized in Lorraine University a special Lipid and Brain IV dedicated to “Lipids in Alzheimer disease”. The latest findings in this world growing disease had the objective to assemble the medical community and the scientists and to improve connections, discussions and exchanges between physicians, nutritionists and fundamental scientists, in an attempt to develop prevention and treatments of this human pathology.
During this meeting with attendees coming from 13 countries, the SFEL had decided to honour by the French Chevreul Medal 2017, a scientist who dedicated his carrier to a very original research in this field: Pr Stephen Cunnane (Université Sherbrooke, Canada): “Is ketone production part of the role of Omega3 fatty acids in the brain”.
This meeting was also the first opportunity to have some of the French members of ISSFAL 2022 (Nantes France) scientific committee to meet with the next Issfal President: Richard Bazinet.

International Symposium on Sunflower and Climate Change, 5th and 6th of February 2018, Toulouse (France)

The International Symposium on Sunflower and Climate Change is organized in the frame of the SUNRISE project, by INRA Toulouse (Institut National de Recherche en Agronomie) and the French technical center for oilseed crops, grain legumes and fibre crops (Terres Inovia), in collaboration with the International Sunflower Association (ISA), the Association for Promotion of Oilseed Plant Selection (Promosol) and the International Consortium for Sunflower Genomics Resources (ICSG).

The organizing committee will be very pleased to welcome you in the city of Toulouse (France) for the International Symposium on Sunflower and Climate Change. This symposium will take place in Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques on February 5th and February 6th 2018.

GERLI meeting Dijon 2017: new deadlines

The 13th GERLI Lipidomics meeting entitled "Fatty acids and lipopolysaccharide from health to diseases"  will held from 23 to 25 October 2017, in Dijon (France). The medieval city of Dijon, capital of the Dukes of Burgundy, is also the gateway to the most prestigious Burgundy vineyards.
This international meeting will be dedicated to fatty acids and lipopolysaccharides, and an open session entitled " emerging topics/open session " will be devoted to recent and emerging data related to other domains of lipids and lipidomics.
The deadline for oral communications has been extended until September the 11th and the early-bird registration until September the 15 th.

Food Antioxidants and Functional Ingredients - Shelf Life Extension, Nutrition and Health: 13 - 14 November 2017, London

The SCI featured event entitled « Food Antioxidants and Functional Ingredients - Shelf Life Extension, Nutrition and Health » is scheduled for 13-14 November 2017, at the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), 14/15 Belgrave Square, London. The main theme of this international conference is understanding antioxidants in terms of food processing, nutrition and health, NPD and impacts on shelf life including the challenges and strategies for a new generation of antioxidant phytochemicals.

The Global Pulse Confederation holds the Global Pulse Convention each year in a different city around the world. The Canadian Special Crops Association holds the Pulse & Special Crops Convention each year in a different Canadian city.

For the first time, the Global Pulse Confederation and the Canadian Special Crops Association are bringing their conventions together for the biggest event the pulse industry has ever seen – Pulses 2017: The Future of Food.

Pulses 2017 will being delegates two and a half days of convention programming and two networking receptions. Much like both individual events, programming will centre on industry issues and advancements as well as the supply and demand outlook for pulse crops in 2017. All plenary and breakout session programming will take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

13e GERLI Lipidomics : "Fatty acids and lipopolysaccharides: from health to diseases"

The 13th GERLI lipidomics meeting will be organized in Dijon 23th to 25th October 2017. During 3 days, it will bring together more than 100 participants coming from different countries. 6 sessions will welcome around 20 plenary lectures - international speakers - and oral communications - intended for young scientists - and about 50 selected posters.

The issue of this 13th edition will be addressed both in plant and mammals through joint sessions. During 2 days, this congress will focus on fatty acids - a topic not been discussed at GERLI meeting since 2008 - and will give an update on the latest advances in cellular detection/signaling, transport, storage, metabolism and related pathophysiological risks (obesity, cancer…). A final session will be
interested in fatty acids related mediators involved in inflammation regulation.

The third day will be dedicated - for the first time at GERLI - to lipopolysaccharides (LPS). LPS or endotoxins are also “lipids” which are pro-inflammatory components of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. LPS are amphipathic molecules composed of a polysaccharide part and lipid A, considered as the active moiety. Thus, LPS exhibit properties similar to lipids, particularly their transport via lipoproteins. In the host, LPS can trigger a systemic inflammatory response. This session should concern both scientists and clinicians.

In addition, an open session entitled " emerging topics/open session " will be devoted (see program) to recent and emerging data related to other domains of lipids and lipidomics.
